Ouch My Eye

So it all started about 2 months ago when somehow I cut the Cornea of my eye. So my mama rushed me to that funny guy in the white coat who always says. This won’t hurt …..Yeah right if he didn’t always have a treat in his hand I would bite him! So he gave mama some medication and this thing…. “The Cone”

He wanted to see me back in 2 weeks to monitor my progress he told her as he latched this thing around my neck so tight I can’t get it off. I can’t scratch my ears or groom myself which is totally driving me nuts as I am a clean dog on a good day. It got worse with thing as I couldn’t get out the dog door, reach the food or water in my bowl, and when I did get outside this cone kept scooping up the dirt every time I tried to find a spot to do my business in. When I went in for my check up we asked for a shorter cone but the Doc doesn’t want anything touching my eye (I think he means me). Because of my breed I am a stout fine looking masculine mix with a big bold neck. My 15 pound body does not fit into the smaller cones. So I tolerated it for a few more weeks but my eye was not getting any better and now my ears were beginning to burn. The inside of my ears were bright red and mama looked at my gums and said they were pail So this time we went to a special eye doctor who suggested I may be allergic to the plastic in the cone and suggested these things for mama to get for me

Mama called up this company called www.doggles.com and explained our situation and one of the lady’s there was all too happy her find them in the Optical Factory store near our help…(If I ever find that Libby lady, I’m gonna bite her ankles, now there will be NO WAY for me to itch my eye) You gotta wonder what the humans were smoking when they came up with these… Sunglasses for Dogs… Whooda thunk it. They strap on both behind my ears and under my chin so I can’t get them off. They are UV Ray protective and have a soft foam to fit snug around my face, they block the wind yet allow air to my infected eye. Well I guess they are pretty cool and I sure do get allot of lovin when I where them outside, but let’s face it..I’m a living doll.

So now I am getting better, and mama is getting hip to my tricks there were a few times she was trying to put those drops in my eye and I would act like she got it in there and whimper and rub my face on the carpet looking so loathly, but I guess one time I acted a little to soon and she said, “ I haven’t even taken the cap off yet” from then on she gets me in this vice grip and I fight her with all my might, but I always loose ….That may be why my eye is getting better. I saw some dogs at that special guys office who had one eyeball!!!!! I am still young and need my beautiful face for my modeling career.

So Thank You Doggles for saving my eye, and thank you to the Veterinarian who prescribed them and thank you for all the cookies.

Mama says if I wear my Doggels in the car I can hang out the window a lil bit and sniff the fresh air, she always afraid I’ll get carried away and fall out.. sheeeees..

Save our Tutles

Next Thursday evening, Defenders and our conservation partners from the Ocean Conservancy and Sierra Club are organizing a special event to empower people in the Tampa Bay area to help save Florida’s turtles. I hope you can join us! Dr. Peter Meylan, Professor of Natural Sciences at Eckerd College will give a presentation on turtle biology and conservation, and then Jessica Koelsch of the Ocean Conservancy and I will talk about how we can all help sea turtles survive by being better neighbors. If you care about saving Florida’s turtles, you won’t want to miss this special event. RSVP now to reserve your spot. What: Educational Event: Learn How to Help Florida’s Imperiled Turtles! When: Thursday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m. Where: St. Petersburg Times Auditorium490 1st Avenue SouthSt. Petersburg, FL During the summer months, a whopping 90% of sea turtles in the Continental U.S. will come ashore to nest on Florida beaches. And they will be coming soon. That's why now's the time to learn what we can do to help turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests and make it safely to the ocean. Learn more about our turtles and what you can do to support their well being in Florida. RSVP now to attend this special event. Even though sea turtles have been around for millions of years, human actions have put them at serious risk of extinction. Scientists have linked the recent drastic decline of sea turtles with habitat lost to coastal development, beach lighting, illegal harvest, fishing net casualties, rising sea levels caused by climate change, and pollution. Loggerhead turtles nesting on Florida beaches have plummeted by more than 40% in the last ten years! It's our responsibility to be good hosts to these ancient ocean travelers and give nesting mothers and their hatchlings the best chance for survival. And our freshwater turtles are in trouble, too. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will soon be considering new rules that will affect freshwater turtles, which are being over-harvested to meet East Asia’s growing demand for food -- and we need to stay engaged to make sure our state officials protect our aquatic friends. Florida’s turtles may be in trouble, but there’s a lot we can do to help them survive and thrive -- if we work together. I hope you’ll join us on Thursday to learn more about what you can do to be a part of these critical efforts. Don’t forget to reserve your spot! I hope to see you soon! Sincerely, Elizabeth FlemingFlorida Representative

Creative Animal Relief Radio show 3/18/2009

This week on www.blogtalkradio.com/creativeanimalrelief we addressed the issue of feeding your dogs home-made dog food. Remember that if you choose to go this route, you need to know your dogs weight and calculate its nutritional needs before you plan the recipes. Dogs need 40% of their total calories from protein sources, 45% from carbohydrates,35% of which needs to come from cooked grains and the other 10% from vegetables and/or fruits, and the last 15% needs to come from a supplemental fat, aka oil source. Additionally, you may need to add salt and/or potassium chloride, a salt substitute, depending upon the meal ingredients, bone meal, mineral supplements, and multivitamins. The amounts of supplements needed will depend upon your dog’s size/weight and ideal caloric intake. All dogs need some salt, but too much salt can cause brain swelling, just as too many vitamins and minerals can be toxic. So make sure that you do your homework and research the requirements for your dog’s size! Once you have that down, be sure to divide by two and offer the daily needs in two sittings. there are many good books on this subject, so please research until you are comfortable. I will post a sample recipe at the end of this post so you can get a feel for it.

This area is dedicated to the 501c3 large events. **The Southern California association for miniature potbellied pigs (SCAMPP) has asked us to relay an urgent request for help.There have been several foreclosures in their area, where many pigs have been left behind. The number of homeless pigs now total about 100. They are collecting donations on behalf of the Apple Valley foreclosure (25 pigs) and the French Valley foreclosure (16 pigs). In addition to the foreclosures they also managed to rescue some abused pigs from a “backyard breeder” (20 pigs - ALL female, most pregnant). And then there are also pigs that they rescued from the Elsinore Animal Shelter (2 female pigs - both pregnant). Additionally they have just discovered a home where there are 50 pigs, and they are only zoned for 20. Unfortunately SCAMPP does not have the funds or the property to house large numbers of pigs such as these. They are in desperate need of donations to help with feed, veterinarian needs, housing needs and they also need help to find adoptive homes for these pigs. Some are already being temporarily fostered, but they cannot be kept at these places for any length of time. They have lots of baby piglets too, so if anyone can help them out with a home, please contact them. Any donations can be made via Paypal on the SCAMPP website http://www.scampp.com/ or mailed to;
SCAMPP, 8304 Limonite Ave, Suite D-Box 21, Riverside, CA 92509.
If donations are to be earmarked for a specific group of pigs, please designate which particular rescue effort you wish your donation to be disburse to.Be assured that 100% of all donations received will go to these rescue efforts!!! In a related note, our own Pigatopia is donating 2 of her wonderful watercolor paintings to SCAMPP to help pay for the care of the pigs in need. Her paintings will be raffled off at SCAMPP’s next meeting! WooHoo Shannon! Way to oink it forward! **Founded in 1996, The Snuggles Project is a wonderful way to help pets in shelters. Thousands of homeless pets have received a little comfort in the form of a Snuggle since this project began. Because shelters house their pets in wire cages, many pets have only newspaper to lie on. A Snuggle is a warm, cozy pet-sized blanket you can make for them. If you sew, knit or crochet, you can become a part of this international project. The website features lists of patterns for knitters, crocheters and people who sew. It also has links to shelters all over the world. You can find shelters near you that accept the Snuggles. If there is not a shelter close to you listed, simply offer to donate your snuggle to your shelter. i am sure that they will be happy to accept your donation, then you can tell them about this project and they can check into signing up!Don’t worry, even if you aren’t a crocheter, knitter or someone who sews, you can sew a simple Snuggle by hand. Just take a piece of heavy fleece material or fake fur and cut it in the sizes listed on the website. You can do a simple whip stitch or blanket stitch around the edges or just leave it without edging. If you can sew a simple straight stitch, you can make an even cozier Snuggle by putting two pieces of flannel or fleece together and including a layer of batting inside. You can even use old towels inside two pieces of material instead of batting. Then you are recycling as well. If you’d like to know more, visit their website at http://www.snugglesproject.org . *The Atlanta Animal Welfare Committee will be holding an art auction/exhibition to raise funds for free spaying/neutering/vaccinating of pets for neighbors in need. They need donations of pieces of art or design to be auctioned off in Atlanta, GA from April 1- 28. The opening will be Saturday, April 4 from 7-9 pm. The artist will set the minimum suggested bid and The bidding will remain open throughout the exhibition. Donations are tax deductible too, so, if you are interested in donating contact Felicia Holden at
animalwelfarecommittee @earthlink.net *The defenders of wildlife are asking for monetary donations to their Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone Wolf Legal Defense fund so that they can go to court and legally try to reverse a decision made by the US government to permit the hunting of wolves in these areas. *The World Society for the protection of animals has sent out an urgent request for people to sign a petition to stop the authorities on the island of Bali, Indonesia, from killing dogs in a knee-jerk reaction to six suspected human rabies fatalities. The government there has begun culling dogs in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease. So far they have killed over 1,000 dogs, many being poisoned with strychnine, which leaves the animals fully conscious while they suffer convulsions and eventually suffocate. As a tourist hot spot Bali cannot afford to lose its ‘rabies-free’ status. However, the Balinese government’s response to this suspected outbreak is ineffective as well as inhumane - a dog cull does not attack the root cause of the disease and cannot safeguard human health. You are being asked to sign an online letter to the Balinese governor, asking him to end the cull and adopt a humane approach to rabies prevention that will protect both animals and people. If this moves you please visit http://e-activist.com/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=24&ea.campaign.id=2826 *Virtually every city in the USA has an animal control place that kills their collectedanimals each week. Few, if any of these take the time, because of funds, to try and get these animals adopted. If you have ANY time to visit and take pictures, you can hook up with petfinders and post those pictures and maybe save an animal from needless destruction! Think about it, you can make a HUGE difference! If you have not read and signed the Javier Cervantes petition, please do so at http://www.cronica.com.mx/notaOpinion.php?id_nota=416958
And Please continue to contact the following links and let the Mexican government know how you feel about the way they dismissed the killing of 40 some animals and the injuring of 30 or so more animals, not to mention the beating and kidnapping of the human that attempted to interceede. We must shine a light into this cruel darkness! By doing so, we can positively impact this investigation and show them that we CARE about the animals, as well fellow human beings! If we all stand together we won’t fall!
